The Iran-Sudan Military Alliance: How a Civil War is Reshaping Red Sea Security

Image
The emerging Sudan-Iran military alliance is rapidly transforming the country's devastating civil war into a critical front in the Middle East's broader proxy conflict, with alarming implications for the security of the Red Sea , a corridor through which nearly 12% of global trade passes. What began in April 2023 as a power struggle between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) is now drawing in regional powers, threatening to destabilize one of the world's most vital maritime arteries. How is Iran influencing the civil war in Sudan? Iran's influence in Sudan is no longer a matter of speculation but a strategic reality. After years of severed ties, relations were restored in 2023, and Tehran has since provided significant military support to the SAF. According to reports, this includes the supply of Iranian-made drones, such as the Mohajer-6, which are capable of carrying precision-guided munitions and have been used to target RSF positio...

Iran’s latest tanker seizure signals projection of power in Persian Gulf

Iran  has taken credit for  seizing a ship  on Friday that was off the coast of the UAE near the  Strait of Hormuz . “Iran’s  Islamic Revolution Guards Corps  (IRGC) Navy has seized an oil tanker off the southern coast of Makran under a judicial order over violations by the vessel,” Iranian state media IRNA said, revealing details about the takeover. The IRGC Navy had monitored the ship, which was a Marshall Islands-flagged tanker named Talara. The IRGC has its own naval vessels, mostly small fast boats. The relatively small Iranian navy has several other larger ships. The IRGC is often involved in Iran’s naval actions in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. What do we know about the Iranian decision to redirect this ship toward Iranian waters? The IRGC Navy said the “...

From Civil War to Proxy Conflict: How Iran is Fueling Instability in Sudan

It is already devastating on the human side of the Sudan civil war. U.S. envoy Tom Perriello puts the number at tens of thousands killed, and the number could reach 150,000 dead, while more than fourteen million people displaced. But into this humanitarian catastrophe, the Islamic Republic of Iran is piling fuel on the flame, turning a contest over national strength into a lethal proxy war with international consequences. The Iranian way is that of opportunistic aggression. The eight-year diplomatic rift notwithstanding, Tehran has taken advantage of the war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), commanded by General al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to regain their influence. Iran is ensuring further strife and debt by supplying the SAF with military drones and equipment instead of peace. This estimated equipping of one side actually makes the SAF an Iranian proxy-army, dragging Sudan into a broader confrontation regionally, where it can hardly afford to engage. Th...
